Injections can be a useful tool in treating a wide variety of joint, muscle, and tissue pain. Injections deliver relief-giving medication directly to the source of your pain or injury, and can be more effective than oral medications. Injections tend to work faster than oral medications and can provide longer-lasting relief.
Depending on the pain you suffer from, one of our trained providers may recommend a specific injection. Once the medication and dose are decided, our expert team will determine the exact location and depth to administer the dose using a tool called fluoroscopy. Injections are available in the Asante Orthopedics and Sports Medicine clinic or at Asante Spine Care for your convenience.
Types of injections available
Steroid Injections
Steroid injections are a type of medication that contain synthetic versions of the hormone cortisone, and deliver a high dose of medication to a specific area, helping to reduce inflammation and pain. Cortisteroid injections can help to treat certain types of arthritis, tendonitis, and bursitis.
Viscosupplementation
Viscosupplementation is a treatment used to help reduce pain and discomfort in those with osteoarthritis. In viscosupplementation, the affected joint is injected with hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body that helps to lubricate and cushion the joints. In people with osteoarthritis, the levels of hyaluronic acid in the joint may be reduced, leading to increased friction and pain. Injecting hyaluronic acid into the joint can help to restore the joint's natural lubrication and cushioning, reducing pain and improving mobility.
SYNVISC
SYNVISC is a specific brand of hyaluronic acid created for viscosupplementation treatment. It is injected into the affected joint once a week for three to five weeks, and can give relief that lasts for several months. SYNVISC is generally considered to be a safe and effective treatment for osteoarthritis, though it may not work for everyone. Your provider will work with you to determine if SYNVISC is right for you.
XIAFLEX
XIAFLEX is a prescription medication used to treat a number of conditions, including Dupuytren's contracture. Dupuytren's contracture is a condition that causes one or more fingers to bend towards the palm of the hand, making it difficult to straighten the fingers. It is caused by a thickening and scarring of the connective tissue under the skin in the palm of the hand.
XIAFLEX is a medication made from purified collagenase, an enzyme that breaks down collagen, a protein found in the connective tissue of the skin. When XIAFLEX is injected into the affected tissue, it helps to break down the collagen, which can help to release the tightness in the tissue, allowing the fingers to straighten out. XIAFLEX is typically used in people who have not responded to other treatments for Dupuytren's contracture, such as splinting or physical therapy. If you suffer from Dupuytren’s contracture, one of our providers will work with you to determine if XIAFLEX is the right treatment for your specific case.
Platelet-rich plasma
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are a type of treatment that involves injecting a concentration of a person's own platelets into an injured or damaged area of the body. Platelets are a type of blood cell integral to the healing process, and contain growth factors that can help to stimulate the repair of tissues.
PRP injections are often used to treat sports injuries, such as strains and sprains, and can be used to treat certain types of chronic pain, such as tendinitis and osteoarthritis.
