Health care professionals seeking to renew their current PALS certification in Medford should register for this course with online and in-person components.
Heartcode® is a blended learning program that provides advanced life support training through a combination of a self-paced, adaptive online learning module and hands on skills practice and testing.
- Step 1: You must complete the online modules (sold separately) prior to attending a skill session. Available at https://shopcpr.heart.org/heartcode-pals.
- Step 2: 4-hour PALS Skill practice and testing (the second step of the two-step process).
Pediatric Advanced Life Support is a course developed by the American Heart Association for the training of health care providers. The PALS Provider course emphasizes knowledge and demonstration of the following skills:
- The critical importance of early high quality CPR and early defibrillation to patient survival.
- The integration of effective BLS with PALS interventions.
- The critical importance of effective high performance team interaction, timing and communication during resuscitation.
Through instruction and active participation in simulated cases, students will enhance skills in recognition and intervention of cardiopulmonary arrest, post cardiac arrest care, acute arrhythmia, stroke and acute coronary syndrome.
Upon successful completion, participants are issued an PALS provider card through the American Heart Association. Provider status is valid for two years, and a renewal course is required to remain an PALS provider.
Objectives
Upon completion of the PALS course the participant will be able to:
- Perform high quality CPR per AHA BLS recommendations.
- Differentiate between patients who do and do not require immediate intervention.
- Perform role as a high performance team member.
- Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure.
- Perform early interventions for respiratory distress and failure.
- Different between compensate and decompensated shock.
- Perform early interventions for the treatment of shock.
- Differentiate between stable and unstable patients with arrhythmia.
- Demonstrate treatment of dysrhythmia.
- Implement post arrest management.
Prerequisites
- Participants should have basic EKG interpretation and pharmacology knowledge. These are not taught in class.
- Registration and module completion verification begins 15 minutes before class start time.
- Participants must come to the class knowledgeable and able to perform recognition and response skills related to BLS, respiratory emergencies, pre-arrest emergencies (bradycardia, tachycardias, acute coronary syndrome, treatment of stroke), cardiac arrest (ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation, PEA, asystole), and post arrest care.

- Participants must complete the HeartCode® PALS online course prior to attending the PALS hands on session.

Participants must email their HeartCode® PALS completion certificate prior to class to ahaeducation@asante.org or bring a printed certificate of completion to class to participate. Participant will be turned away if completion certificate is not provided.

Accreditation - Nursing continuing education
Provider to be approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing Provider Number CEP 17823 for 8 contact hours.

- The in-person skills class lasts approximately 4 hours.

Registration deadline
Three weeks prior to course
Enrollment is limited and registration is accepted on a first-come basis. Payment must accompany registration to be accepted. Confirmation and course information are emailed to provided address upon acceptance of application. The course will be cancelled if fewer than five students enroll.
Cancellations
Cancellations must be received via email to ahaeducation@asante.org 14 calendar days before the first date of the course for refund. No refunds will be made after the 14-day date.
