- Step 1: You must complete the online modules (sold separately) prior to attending a skill session. Available at https://shopcpr.heart.org/heartcode-acls.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support is a course developed by the American Heart Association for the training of health care providers. The ACLS Provider course emphasizes three major concepts:
- The critical importance of early high quality CPR and early defibrillation to patient survival.
- The integration of effective BLS with ACLS interventions.
- The critical importance of effective high performance team interaction, timing and communication during resuscitation.
Through instruction and active participation in simulated cases, students will enhance skills in recognition and intervention of cardiopulmonary arrest, post cardiac arrest care, acute arrhythmia, stroke and acute coronary syndrome.
Upon successful completion, participants are issued an ACLS provider card through the American Heart Association. Provider status is valid for two years, and a renewal course is required to remain an ACLS provider.
Objectives
Upon completion of the ACLS course the participant will be able to:
- Recognize and initiate early management of peri-arrest conditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome.
- Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating AED use.
- Manage cardiac arrest until return of spontaneous circulation, termination of resuscitation or transfer of care.
- Identify and treat ischemic chest pain and expedite the care of patients with acute coronary syndromes.
- Recognize other life-threatening clinical situations, such as stroke, and provide effective initial care and transfer to reduce disability and death.
- Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.
