About this provider

Life in a small Montana town provided up-close health care experiences for Matthew Hiesterman, DO. Meeting the physicians who shared an office building with his father who was a dentist, Dr. Hiesterman learned early the importance of relationships. Both Dr. Hiesterman and his twin brother became surgeons.

“I remember being fascinated by the teaching skeleton in the doctor’s closet. I still find anatomy really interesting. It’s satisfying to treat an underlying disease and really help someone. There is an art to it as well.”

Dr. Hiesterman completed a doctor of osteopathy program and then general surgical residency. He practices a wide array of surgical interventions using minimally-invasive techniques and endoscopy. He provides treatment for varicose vein conditions with an outpatient vein ablation procedure. Additionally, Dr. Hiesterman serves as the medical director of the wound and hyperbaric treatment center at Asante Ashland Community Hospital.

Valuing perseverance in addition to compassion, Dr. Hiesterman, believes in treating each patient as an individual. “I help my patients understand their symptoms and condition, and, what I can do to help them. That is the heart of it all. Going the extra mile to build that understanding is really important to me.”

With his wife and children, Dr. Hiesterman enjoys the outdoors, with his children’s activities filling much of the time. He enjoys cooking healthy meals for his family.

I have had two appointments with Dr. Hiesterman and both exceeded my expectations. He has a wonderful manner, shares knowledge, listens, and addresses my questions. I feel respected and cared for. I am not crazy about the clinic tho. Looks like it has been significantly downsized since I was there a few years ago - empty. Perhaps the hospital is in process of moving or changing things around. Understand the expenses.

Dr Heisterman and staff are absolutely the best. I have seen many Dr's and surgeons in the last 6 years and none of them come close to the level of care, understanding, or compassion I received from Dr Heisterman and staff. This man is truly an Angel. I can not say enough good things about him and he will probably never know how much he has changed my life. ABSOLUTELY THE BEST!!

Dr. Steinsiek? (He said Bill, but it's James Steinsiek in MyChart) explained extra thoroughly about the [ ] and lowered my [ ]. The admitting nurse-like person (I am not sure she was a RN instead of a different job title) for the [ ] was also extremely good. I am sad that I did not get her name.

My visit was only a first/only consultation, he had a good suggestion for a procedure we could do to make me more comfortable....I appreciated that and have agreed to do it end May... Dr. Heesterman was very kind to help me understand the organs and how they lay in the body...much appreciated...(my request for clarity_) I found him very personable, well versed, diligent, replied to all of my questions... His easy relaxed manner was very helpful as I dread medical visits.. Big time~! My hope is that he will be as kind and patient when I have arrived , terrified... end of May...

I explained that I was disappointed in some diagnostics I had had earlier in the year at another facility, as I am still having the same symptoms. He offered to go over the CT scan that was taken and evaluate for me. I am extremely grateful for that.

Dr Hiesterman assumed care after presenting in ER, with a Dx of an Acute Gallbladder attack. He came to ER ,explained he would take me to surgery for an Cholecystectomy and answered all my questions re the procedure in full, and did not leave until he made me feel at ease. His bedside manner was comforting. I was kept overnight, Prior to discharge, he came to my room, he sat at the bedside, explained what he found and how the procedure went. He again answered all my questions,and did not leave until I felt comfortable, and did not appear in a hurried manner. His manner, again was comforting. My follow up, we spoke as both patient and colleague,as I had worked 20yrs in ER /International Flight Nurse. I told him it was so nice to see a newer breed or type of Surgeons…different then older days…not afraid to take the time with their patients,explain things in entirety, making a person assured they felt comfortable and talked to as an equal with genuine compassion for their care.

Not able to get a regular surgery August middle of given, still not until 1/19/24, for Hernia Repair. Hernia was agreed end of August, very long rood, I have wrong with the event.

He also addressed my mother, who was present, and I appreciated that as she is who I live with & who takes care of me when my health tanks.

I have no experience with the medical establishment, so I have no basis to know if Dr Heisterman should be recognized for his excellence. I do know that he was very receptive to my questions and his responses were professional. I felt that he listened to my concerns and questions. He was clear with what his expectations for my recover were and what my role in recovery should be.

I have been so impressed with Dr. Heisterman and the others who work with him. I was a little nervous before having surgery a few weeks ago, as it was my first surgery. Everyone that had a part of the procedure (including the young gal who got me all prepped for surgery) was so kind and reassuring. I was very impressed that they each came in to introduce themselves, asked how I was doing, informed me of what they would be doing and answered any questions I had. I was again impressed that Dr. Heisterman called me the next day to check on how I was doing.

My initial consult with Dr. Hiesterman was excellent. The nurse/physician's assistant that took my initial information before I met with the doctor was kind, respectful, and efficient. My time with the doctor was so reassuring. He was personable, knowledgeable, and incredibly clear about our next steps (including the why and potential risks). I walked out of his office feeling confident and grateful that I had been referred to him.

Dr. H is amazing and shows that he isn’t above being human. He told us a story that shows he strives to be the best surgeon he can be, and will ask another colleague how they are accomplishing a goal ([ ]). It was nice to hear that he isn’t above asking another colleague if he notices their patients are faring slightly better than his own what they are doing differently. I have faith that he is the right surgeon for me.

Dr Mathew Hiesterman. He came to the Emergency room, diagnosed [ ], ordered the scan, bloodwork, and set up and operated at midnight. Spent the night in the hospital. He came to see me in the morning. I was discharged in the afternoon after receiving my post surgery appointment date and other instructions. My post op. appointment was as smooth and pleasant as it could be. All staff was right on! Extremely grateful to Dr Hiesterman for his knowledge and skill and kindly and attentive and dedicated way of handling the whole experience. I was so lucky, and really appreciate it.

When I had concerns following my appendectomy I talked about them to Dr. Hiesterman's medical assistant (Dan?). He was patient, kind, and helpful. The procedure I scheduled tends to cause concern for men in their 50s. Dr. Hiesterman and his team were excellent with providing relevant information regarding the preparation, procedure, and aftercare. As for the day of procedure, staff, from reception to nurse who escorted me out, were kind and did a great job to minimize my anxiety. Lastly, I had made a scheduling error and showed up a week early to my appointment. Staff and Dr. Hiesterman managed to re-arrange schedules and fit me in.

The person who greeted and checked me in at the door of ACH; the fellow behind the front desk who helped me with kiosk; Laura, the nurse in surgery; David and TJ, the nurses in charge of my sedation; Amanda, Dr. Hiesterman's assistant. All had excellent patient-person skills; I spent the most time with Laura, and she was outstanding. Competent, friendly, articulate.

Dr. Heisterman was and is an outstanding doctor. He made me feel safe, regarded well, concerned and cared for. He treated me with kindness and respect and he was transparent in his care never leaving me with questions or problems or concerns. He went out of his way to address my concerns. The staff at Ashland community hospital - nurses, CNAs, desk clerks, kitchen staff, and environmental services all provided the most excellent care. I felt respected, cared for, listened to, and that they went above and beyond to make my healing and wellness their priority.

The ER staff was excellent! Also, Dr. [ ] (my general surgeon) was great! He was very supportive since I had to be alone in the ER and going into surgery without my husband. Dr. Kim explained in detail how he would accomplish the surgery technique ( with Covid-19 protocols). He was so kind and gave me confidence that all was going to be alright. I went into surgery with confidence and reassurance. I feel Ashland Community Hospital always does their very best no matter the level of service that is being given. I am most grateful for the care received there.
