Asante named a 15 Top Health System in the Nation seven years in a row

The only health system in Oregon and Washington to achieve this award

Watson Health 15 Top - Asante

For the seventh year in a row, Asante has been named one of IBM Watson Health’s 15 Top Health Systems in the nation. Asante is one of just two health systems to achieve seven-time status — the other is Mayo Clinic.

“This recognition reflects our efforts across all three of our hospitals in Medford, Grants Pass and Ashland, and would not be possible without the dedication of our employees, physicians, health care providers, leaders and volunteers,” said Scott Kelly, president and CEO of Asante. “To achieve this award a handful of times is remarkable for any health system. To achieve it seven times is extraordinary.”

This year’s study evaluated 337 health systems and 2,961 member hospitals across the nation to identify the 15 health systems with the highest overall achievement on five performance measures: inpatient outcomes, process of care, extended outcomes, efficiency and patient experience.

“The Watson Health study is a significant indicator of quality in the health care industry,” said Jamie Grebosky, MD, Asante’s senior vice president and chief medical and quality officer. “We continually evaluate our processes and embrace or develop our own best practices to ensure the highest level
of patient care.”

Based on results of the study, if all similarly-situated Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities:

  • More than 60,000 additional lives could be saved
  • More than 26,000 additional patients could be complication-free
  • Health-care-associated infections would be reduced by 10%
  • Patients would spend 38 minutes less in hospital emergency rooms per visit

There are five health system winners in three categories — small, medium and large — based on annual operating expenses. With operating revenue just under $900 million, Asante is currently ranked in the top five of the small category. The award is not applied or paid for by any health system.
